OWN's Serving Life is Affirming

Serving Time Though not reflected in the ratings, the Documentary Club is one thing the Oprah Winfrey Network is doing right. Serving Life, which premieres Thursday at 9/8c, makes the channel 3-for-3 in its presentation of feature-length cultural studies. The riveting Serving Life focuses on four new volunteers in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola's hospice program — all long-term inmates themselves. Because the average sentence at the maximum security prison is 93 years, inmates die there, some inevitably from terminal illness. To handle this, warden Burl Cain has instituted a hospice program, reasoning, "It's just immoral not to care about somebody dying and try to have compassion when they're going to wherever they're going." The irony of killers watching over the dying gives way to a more subtle twist: While death is the reason that so many of them are serving at Angola in the first place, it has become their salvation. As Cain explains, "Hospice is the ultimate test: have you changed or have you not?" Not only do these criminals find use for their time caring for those who often cannot so much as bathe themselves, they're also confronted with the enormity of the crimes they've committed. OWN's Sons of Perdition is fundamentally fascinating Director Lisa R. Cohen dares to explore the emotional lives of prisoners. This is why her work stands out from the wide range of prison programming that populates contemporary airwaves. Her eye is as unflinching as the hospice workers do their jobs, and a disclaimer precedes the film accordingly: "The events that take place in this documentary are factual. This program contains scenes of death and dying. Viewer discretion is advised." What initially sounds like the most hardcore piece of work that Oprah's ever attached her name to is gentler than that: Yes, you are confronted with shots of deteriorating men who slip away before your eyes, but Serving Life never feels particularly sensationalistic (slow deaths aren't exactly sexy). At one point, one prisoner's death is confirmed with the gentle head shake of one of the men who's looking after him. The subject of dying rarely is handled with such subtlety, regardless of the medium. Serving Live is necessarily heavy, and Cohen provides a relatable touchstone for viewers in Charles Rogers, one of the featured quartet of volunteers in the program, who's serving 35 years for armed robbery. His struggle with his job is pronounced and utterly human. Could you deal well with other people's bed sores and feces if you were never confronted by such things before? Cohen makes you relate to a supposedly hardened criminal. Becoming Chaz review: Human after all That is the movie's beauty: You never forget that these people have committed terrible acts, and yet overwhelming compassion supersedes it. The image of a frail, dying old man eating ice cream is moving, regardless of his murder history. The assertion by Anthony Middlebrooks Jr., another of the four volunteers, that, "I've heard hospice referred to as a process of helping one die with dignity, but more than that, I feel it's helping one live out life with love," is poetic despite the fact that a robber has said it. Serving Life does not seek to apologize for the heinous pasts of those it profiles. It's too pragmatic for that. Watching people being good to each other in this capacity is moving enough to make one prisoner's clichéd insight at the end of the film ("Giving back, that's what really matters") tolerable, if not essential.

Fox Searchlight has optioned a comedy spec script from _Easy A_ writer Bert Royal called _A Thousand Words or Less_, which is set against the background of a national essay championship. *Shailene Woodley*, who stars in ABC Family's _The Secret Life of the American Teenager_ and who will be seen in Searchlight's upcoming _The Descendants_, is atop the list of potential leads to play one of three teens who get caught up in the contest. what is your christian playlist for workout?

I've been a christian for quite some time now, however I also started
working out early this year and have listened to some christian/gospel
music during the early phases. I recently started falling off track
with being a christian and going into worldly ways until today when I
saw my pastor/friend before his bible study.

why is there a yellowish area around spaceships in star wars/trek?

when viewing star wars/star trek or any of those types of movies, i
see a shape around the ships as they fly through space. usually this
shape is yellowish in color and follows the ship where ever it flies.
what is it and what creates it?

i watched fast and furious all parts, torque, 200mph, fast track no

What should I watch on tv?

I'm to lazy to go through the channels and I don't want go to t.v

Studio Ghibli's Borrowers adaption Arrietty gets a UK trailer

*A full UK trailer for _Arrietty_, Studio Ghibli's adaptation of The
Borrowers book series, has landed online, complete with UK-specific
voice talent.*

There have previously been some Japanese language teasers, but this
new version gives a much fuller idea of what to expect from the movie,
and it looks mightily impressive.

Mary Norton's novels have been adapted before: there was an American
TV movie in the '70s, a 1997 film, and a much-loved, Ian-Holm starring
BBC series in the early '90s.

This version looks to have captured the innate charm of the little
folk who reside in the nooks and crannies of human homes, 'borrowing'
everyday items to survive, without sacrificing the visual splendour
we've come to expect from Studio Ghibli.

The animation looks as rich and detailed as ever, and the action
scenes as thrillingly kinetic. Hiromasa Yonebayashi makes his
directorial debut, with Ghibli godfather Hayao Miyazaki overseeing
production.

Unusually, this version seems to have a UK-specific cast, with Saoirse
Ronan and Mark Strong lending their vocal chords to the dub. The US
version features Will Arnett and Amy Poehler.

Enough dithering, here's that trailer:

_Arrietty_ opens in the UK on 29 July, while US audiences will have to
wait until next year to see it.

i know the original has them in but there's a version i used to have
but don't know where i got it from that was almost more upbeat than
the original and had more horns in it. they were much more prominent
than in the original.

Serious this time, what is the name of this movie?

There were 9 kids, they lost a baseball over a fence in a sandlot.
They would play baseball games in the sandlot and get into trouble at
the local pool. The sandlot is where most of the movie took
place...This is really bugging me, please help.

'Cross-fire'), was a paintball-based TV gameshow, aired on Channel 4
in the UK and presented by Ed Hall. The programme was a game show,
featuring a strike team consisting of 6 players armed with paintball
markers (known as 'emulsifiers'), who attempt to complete challenges
in simulated Special Forces-type raids against similarly-armed
opponents. In general, the contestants play games of paintball
against the show's antagonists in elaborately constructed scenarios.
The teams would be opposed by a host of 'grunts', armed with
slow-firing weapons and the 'Special Forces'; six individuals (with
made-up character names and bios) armed with the same weapons as the
contestants. These Special Forces were named Hellmet (named Helmet
Strebi) (ranked Oberleutnant), Morgan (Morgan Johnson) (ranked
Sergeant), Clawz (Vanessa Upton) (Private), Dalia (Dalia
Mikneviciute) (Sergeant), AJ (Andrew J Dickens) (Commander) and
Little Yin (Anna Luong) (Private).'Grunts' would typically be
dispatched quickly, whereas the Special Forces would take strong
defensive positions and present serious challenges to the team.
